Andrew Wallace is the New Speaker of the House of Representatives
Andrew Wallace is the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. A former construction lawyer, he was first elected to parliament in 2016 and re-elected this year. Prime Minister Scott Morrison congratulated Wallace on his election and described him as “a man of strong faith and reason.” He praised his wide experience and his “strong sense of fairness.” He will continue to represent the Sunshine Coast as the next speaker. We are excited to have Andrew Wallace in our government.
Andrew Wallace is a backbench MP and father. He has been a carpenter for many years and is currently the patrol captain of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. He is a passionate advocate for youth and has served as its President and Vice-President. He has a passion for the Sunshine Coast and works closely with the community, donating his time to various causes. His nomination was seconded by the Member for Fisher.
A devoted Democrat, Andrew Wallace has been a member of the House of Representatives since September 2019. He is the successor to Tony Smith, who resigned as a speaker on 23 November 2021. The new Speaker, Andrew has a majority of 70 votes, defeating the Labor Party’s Rob Mitchell by a wide margin. However, it is unclear if he will be sitting in the Liberal Party room, announcing his candidacy for the position.
Mr. Wallace has been a member of the Speaker’s panel since September 2019 and was voted into the position by the House of Representatives in a 70–59 vote. Despite the fact that he’s a member of the Liberal Party, he has promised not to sit in the Labor Party room during his time as Speaker. This has been met with widespread approval. Andrew Wallace’s longstanding political career has taken him to many prestigious roles. He is a member of the Queensland house of representatives and represents the Sunshine Coast. His wife, Leonie, a former barrister, and youngest daughter Sarah live in the town of Fisher. The family has lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 25 years. In addition to his role as Speaker, Mr. Wallace is an active member of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. He has previously served as Honorary Secretary and Vice-President of the club, and he is now a member of the club’s 24-hour Emergency Response Team. His passion for helping young people is evident in his work for the centre.
As a member of the Speaker’s panel, Mr. Wallace’s political career started in a career as a carpenter. He worked for several years as a barrister before entering parliament. He is a member of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. He’s currently a Patrol Captain and part of the Club’s Emergency Response Team. As a father and a public servant, Andrew Wallace is committed to helping children. He has served on the board of directors of Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre and is a member of the Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Saving Association and a governing body of the Queensland House of Representatives.
